Here are most frequently asked questions about Estonian migration law:
1. If I want to work in Estonia, do I need a visa or a TRP?
Either one is suitable. Apply for a D-visa if you’ll stay until a year and for a TRP if you’ll stay for more than a year. Depending on which one you apply for, you have to fulfill the requirements for the visa or the TRP. The TRP is meant for those who relocate to Estonia to live permanently, so the requirements for TRP are more specific and thus TRP is a bit more difficult to apply for.
2. My visa/TRP is expiring soon. What should I do?
If there is less than 2 months to the expiration date, apply for a D-visa. Although the TRP procedure is officially 2 months, it can also last longer if the police decides to ask you additional questions regarding your stay. Note that if your visa or TRP expires and you have no other document that allows you to stay in the Schengen area, you need to leave Estonia.
3. Which document do I need to start a business in Estonia?
You need any kind of document (visa or living permit) that allows you to be in Estonia legally. Business registration can even be done with a C-visa (short-term visa), but make sure you have enough time to do all the necessary procedures (registration, bank account etc). The best option would be to enter with a visa and apply for a TRP when the business is already established, if you wish to relocate permanently.
